Sorry I don’t have any personal crappy news; I’m in pretty good health and I’ve still got an ass that won’t quit, so life is good right now. No, the crappy news I’m referring to is much less exciting.
I read the news on msn.com pretty much every morning. I could embark on an entirely new and different rant about what passes as ‘news’ right now (How to update your facebook better!) but right now I’m too flabbergasted to be angry. I’m flabbergasted, yes flabbergasted, because I find at least one grammatical error or straight up typo once a day. Excuse me but what the fuck?
I have decent grammar and can tell the difference between there, their and they’re. I’m good at catching errors and on occasion I’m asked to proofread things for friends, which I love doing! I am positive that I make grammatical and spelling errors of my own, because I make mistakes and I’m not a robot yet.
But seriously? This is a news site. Over the past few years I’ve noticed more and more mistakes in actual ‘real’ news articles. Flagrant mistakes that just shouldn’t happen on a site as big as msn. These two are just from today…and this happens almost every day!
Check these out, they’re like bad jokes:
In the first they just straight up forget a whole word. A rather important word in that particular sentence; I’m going to guess it was supposed to be the word “attach”. It makes me think of the I.O.U. part in Dumb and Dumber. Look, see this? That’s a car. 275 thou. Might wanna hang onto that one.
In the second, I just don’t even understand. That legit makes me think the caption was generated by software. What is the editorial process over there?
I am nitpicking because I have a teeny little blog and I proofread the shit out of it before I post anything. I’ve proofread this post literally four times already. But msn is a pretty well respected (major?) news site that reports on international issues – tons of people get their news from there. I think of the 60’s [I should say, ‘I imagine the 60’s’, because I wasn’t even a gleam in my father’s eye yet] and think of what would happen to those news guys if they published crap like this and printed it. A flogging? God I hope a flogging. Are these articles generated by machines? Is any human at msn actually proofreading any of this? Mistakes happen and will always happen. But guys. GUYS. Are you hiring?
